MOL Earns High Marks from Sustainability Management Rating Institute

TOKYO – Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Kunio Suzuki) today announced that it has been selected as one of Japan's leading companies in environmental management. MOL was chosen as one of the "Green Top Runner 68" companies in 2003 by the Sustainability Management Rating Institute (President: Dr. Kazutomi Mita), an affiliate of Sustainable Management Forum (Honorable Chairman: Dr. Junichi Nishizawa, Chairman: Dr. Kazutomi Mita), a non-profit organization. "Green Top Runner" companies have developed and implemented advanced environmental management systems that exemplify Japan's commitment to protecting the environment and fostering sustainable development.

MOL and other companies on the list have successfully undergone an extensive sustainability management rating evaluation. The results were announced yesterday at Keidanren Hall in Tokyo.

Sustainability management ratings focus on three categories - soundness of management (corporate philosophy, corporate governance, risk management, information disclosure, etc.), corporate citizenship (corporate culture, Occupational safety and health, consideration for consumers, equal opportunity, etc.), and approaches to environmental protection. They are one of the indices of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Japan.

These ratings identified 75 leading companies - mainly large manufacturers - that take an aggressive approach to environmental management. 68 of them agreed to disclose their names, three of them in the transport industry --including one shipping company and one airline. In the 63 phases of the screening process in the three focal categories, MOL was rated "excellent" in 52, "good" in eight, and "fair" in three. It received 100% "excellent" scores in the management category, and did not receive a "poor" rating in any category.

Furthermore MOL ranked among the top 19 non-manufacturers and placed second to Hitachi Transport System, Ltd. in the transportation, warehousing, and real estate division in the 7th Environment Management Research project conducted by Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc., and announced in December 2003. MOL continues to focus on environmental protection and sustainable social development in all its business activities.
